Sanctuary Wildlife Photography Awards 2016
Special Mention: Mihir Mahajan
Lover’s Spat: On a steep ridge in the frosty mountains of the famous Hemis National Park in Ladakh, a pair of courting snow leopards interrupts their lovemaking in favour of a quick brawl. Usually clicked in furtive or shy repose that makes them seem inordinately benign, this image serves as a reminder that snow leopards lack neither fury nor strength. Mihir Mahajan trekked in this inhospitable landscape for three hours to reach the spot from where he could make this image. Hemis is considered one of the best places in the world to spot a snow leopard in the wild, and tourism driven by this flagship species is blossoming around the park, even as it benefits local communities.
