Sanctuary Wildlife Photography Awards 2014
SPECIAL MENTION: SANJEET MANGAT
All Aflutter: Shokaliya in Rajasthan is known for its healthy population of Indian Eagle-owls Bubo bengalensis, but that in itself is no guarantee of obtaining a good image. With infinite patience, the photographer waited at dusk as an Eagle-owl first alighted on a branch and then swooped down to an abandoned open-pit mine. After an hour and a half, the owl stretched its wings, allowing the photographer to make this stunning image, before taking to wing in preparation for its nightly hunt. Adults of this species have a resonant two-note call that can be heard at dusk and dawn in the arid, rocky scrub forests that they inhabit.
