A tusker seems to enjoy the rain. This largest terrestrial herbivore possesses a glorious history in association with man. Yet this species is ruthlessly persecuted, either for ‘sport’ or for the value of its ivory. In Asia, only male elephants sport tusks. According to some naturalists, if females too had tusks (as their African counterparts do) the poachers may well have wiped out the entire species.
