Not very vocal, tigers use sound far less frequently than lions. However, when they do so, it is with a specific purpose, which can range from a deep moaning ‘aoom’ to attract a mate or a feeble purr to call cubs to a deafening snarl to indicate displeasure, either towards other tigers or curious photographers who get uncomfortably close to them.
