Egret by Praveen P. Mohandas
Another image with both soul and natural history value! The shallow backwaters of Kerala provide the right habitat for specialised fish eaters such as Egrets that gather in hundreds during a feeding frenzy. The many inland and coastal swamps offer bountiful fish for all kinds of fishing communities – bird and human alike. Rather than perceiving such birds as indicators of the health of such ecosystems, policy makers have suggested culling thousands of birds by declaring them as pests on the fishing industry! If this is allowed, ‘God’s own country’ will be perpetrating an irreversible crime on nature’s finest creations.
