Black Francolin by Devesh Gadhvi

Frozen in time and space, these two male Black Francolins Francolinus francolinus jostle for dominance in mid-air, encapsulating the ancient ‘survival of the fittest’ dictum of evolution. Each year, prior to the rains, the grasslands of Kutchh come alive with the incessant calls of male francolins advertising their availability to females even as they challenge competitive males. If the auditory challenge is ignored, hostility that involves more calls, kicks and vicious jabs with bills may result. The winner generally takes all… the territory and the mates, while the vanquished loses both feathers and the much sought after females.
