Softshell Turtle by Praveen P. Mohandas
A softshell turtle Aspideretus sp., one of nature’s most efficient solar-powered creatures, spreads out to soak in the morning sun on a cold winter day in the Tadoba Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra. Humans seem slow on the uptake. In nature, both plants and animals have recognised the gains to be had from the sun’s energy, while we are busy destroying wild places such as Tadoba in our quest for coal mining, one of the most dangerous greenhouse gas producing activities. Apart from offering nesting sites free from human disturbance, tiger reserves provide countless species such as turtles with the food they need to bring up their young. In return these creatures perform an unmatched water purification service for all lifeforms in the forest.
