While scientists quibble with each other over minutiae, the quality of daily life of the average person is plummeting. Today Indians take a fatalistic attitude to the problems of floods, droughts, disease and hunger, naively believing that they can do little to better their lot. But these are the seeds of social unrest and could destabilise not just cities, but nations.
