Climate Change Photography Contest 2007
Special Mention: Kalyan Varma – Hopeless: At one time, when forests were vast and human populations were low, slash-and-burn agriculture (jhoom) might have been sustainable. Today, it is a sure road to self-destruction and hopelessness that has so graphically been captured by this image. Forest fires are one of the world’s most significant sources of greenhouse gases. In Amazonia, fires are set by large cattle ranchers. In India, marginal farmers are largely responsible.
