‘Brighten the World’ This freshly emerged Atlas moth is a member of the family Saturnidae, commonly found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, and the Malay archipelago. Considered the largest moth in the world, its wingspans have been known to reach over 25 cm. The insect is conspicuous due to its brightly coloured map?like markings. Since the adult does not have mouthparts, it cannot eat, surviving long enough (a week or two at best) on reserves built up as a caterpillar, to successfully mate and then die.
