Special Mention: RAJENDRA DHAGE – ‘Reflection’
‘Reflection’ This image of a Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis gliding just above the surface of the water in a flash of electric blue was taken near Wai, Maharashtra, in a spot that Dhage described as dirty beyond imagination. We at Sanctuary were as surprised with this information as he was since this bird is a well?known indicator of the health of the freshwater bodies it frequents. The highest densities of breeding Common Kingfishers are, of course, only to be found in habitats with clear waters that permit optimal prey visibility, with suitable trees or shrubs that serve as perches from which the birds can launch attacks.
